The Steelers Should Fill THIS Hole Before All Others | Episode 70
Wednesday Sep 17, 2025
Wednesday Sep 17, 2025
The Keeanu Benton experiment at nose tackle has officially reached a turning point. We dive into why his 309-pound frame fails to meet the demands of an NFL nose tackle position, especially when we have bigger, more suitable options like Yaya Black available. The Steelers’ run defense continues to struggle, surrendering an alarming 149.5 yards per game, ranking 28th in the league, along with 4.4 yards per carry, which places them at 22nd. While it's not typical to expect many stats from a nose tackle, Benton's performance has been underwhelming, with only three tackles across two games. It’s essential to note that the blame doesn’t fall solely on Benton; there are opportunities for the team to utilize slants and twists to maximize his athleticism. The Pittsburgh Steelers' secondary is facing significant challenges this season, ranking 25th in the league by allowing 245 passing yards per game. Opponents are completing 69% of their passes against them, placing the Steelers at 24th in that category, and they are struggling to limit passing first downs, averaging only 11 per game, which is good for 18th. The team’s ability to defend against deep passes is even more telling, with a yards-per-completion rate of just 12.9, ranking them at 31st overall. Justin Fields' struggles against the Bills and Sam Darnold's average performance against the 49ers have shown that while the secondary may be challenged, there's potential for improvement. The middle of the field has been particularly vulnerable, as both safeties have struggled to make an impact, with Thornhill facing issues and Clark performing slightly better, but still not living up to expectations. Linebackers must step up, yet the inability to stop the run leaves them susceptible to play fakes and misdirection. If the Steelers want to turn things around, we'll need to see adjustments across the board. Join us as we break down the state of the secondary and discuss what changes might be necessary moving forward! The Pittsburgh Steelers face a critical moment as the struggles continue on the offensive line, overshadowing the immediate need for a solid WR2. While the team has attempted to bolster the receiving corps—Roman Wilson has been disappointing, Scotty Miller isn’t contributing, and Skowronek is mainly a special teamer—the real issue lies in the inefficient pass protection. Frazier has shown potential but isn’t as effective as last season, while Seamalu’s performance is underwhelming, and Fautanu seems to be picking up bad habits. Broderick Jones is raising red flags, and McCormick's technique hasn’t improved, leading to more questions than answers. The run game is just as bleak, averaging 62.5 yards per game (30th in the league) and a mere 3.0 yards per carry, with the team yet to score a rushing touchdown. What’s happening with T.J. Watt this season? Despite his reputation as a defensive powerhouse, he hasn’t recorded a sack in the last six games, marking five sacks over his last 17 outings. Double teams are proving effective against him, but he must find a way to break through. On the flip side, Watt remains a force in the run game, racking up nine tackles and two tackles for loss, showing he can still dominate in that aspect. However, the team's schematics need to adjust to better utilize his talents. There’s been some movement in his positioning, but it’s clear they need to implement more disguised blitzes to create opportunities for him. The Steelers came crashing back down in Week 2 as the offense regressed badly while the defense held steady, creating a frustratingly familiar formula that just won’t cut it in 2025. Aaron Rodgers and Arthur Smith’s unit failed to build on the momentum from Week 1, looking flat and inconsistent at home, while Jalen Ramsey and the defense once again did their part to keep the game within reach. This Report Card dives into what went wrong offensively, why the defense can’t carry the load every week, and how Pittsburgh needs to respond moving forward. The Steelers Have More Problems On Their Hands Besides BRODERICK JONES | Episode 69
Wednesday Sep 10, 2025
Wednesday Sep 10, 2025
The struggles of the Steelers' offensive line extend far beyond Broderick Jones, who had a rough outing that was unfortunately difficult to ignore. Isaac Seumalo had a tough game, showcasing what might have been his worst performance in a Steelers uniform, potentially due to a lack of preseason play after an injury. Zach Frazier brought an edge but faced challenges in the run game, failing to create the movement he did last season. Meanwhile, Troy Fautanu, in just his second start, had some issues in pass protection as the game's speed presented a steep learning curve. On a more positive note, Mason McCormick stood out as the best offensive lineman against the Jets, though his technique still needs refinement. It’s worth noting that the Jets' defensive line is quite formidable, adding an extra layer of challenge to an already struggling offensive front. Join us as we break down these performances and what they mean for the Steelers moving forward.
Â
Aaron Rodgers showcased an impressive performance, easing the worries of Steelers fans as he brought a level of talent not seen in the quarterback position for over five years. His arm strength was evident, and while he wasn't overly mobile, he managed to execute effectively when rolling out and throwing on the run. The Steelers desperately needed a quarterback like him—someone who could deliver accurate throws, escape bad plays, and stand tall in the pocket despite taking hits. With solid numbers on the day—completing 22 of 30 passes for 244 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions, along with a passer rating of 136—his impact was clear. However, it’s essential to temper our excitement; this performance came in just one week, and the offensive line must improve to ensure his protection moving forward. For now, all we can focus on is what he has delivered thus far.
Â
PFF's credibility is under serious scrutiny, and it’s time to call it what it is—an analytical tool filled with numbers but lacking real football context. How can Aaron Rodgers and Broderick Jones have identical PFF grades of 54.8? Incredibly, PFF ranked Rodgers as the 28th best passer, trailing behind names like Spencer Rattler, Cam Ward, Baker Mayfield, J.J. McCarthy, and Bryce Young. To put it in perspective, Rodgers nearly tied with Russell Wilson, who completed just 17 of 37 passes with zero touchdowns and a dismal 46% completion rate. Meanwhile, Myles Garrett showcased his talents in the game with five quarterback pressures, two sacks, and three QB hits, yet the Bengals could muster only 46 rushing yards. Is PFF really providing an accurate measure, or is it time for fans to reconsider its validity? Let us know your thoughts!
Â
Defensive schemes aren't the root of the Steelers' struggles – it's time to look deeper. While it's easy to point fingers at Tomlin and Austin, the real problem lies in a lack of aggression and predictability. The dominance displayed by the Jets was a wake-up call; our defensive line was consistently overpowered, highlighting weaknesses that must be addressed. Keanu Benton, although promising, isn’t cutting it as a nose tackle – he needs to shift out. Loudermilk should not be starting; he’s a role player at best. Daniel Ekuale stepped up with a much better performance and should take the reins until Harmon's return. As for Queen and Wilson, their absence on the field wasn't due to any scheme but rather their own inability to be physical and stay engaged. It’s critical to recognize that execution, not the playbook, is where the issues lie.
