DK Metcalf's performance has fallen short of WR1 expectations, with just 10 catches on 17 targets for 135 yards and 2 touchdowns this season. Averaging only 3 receptions per game while earning $33 million is not acceptable, and trailing Jaylen Warren in both catches and yards raises questions. The offensive line struggles are contributing to his underwhelming stats, as the inability to run the ball has allowed defenses to sit back in a two-high shell, stifling deep shots and play-action opportunities. To make matters worse, the offensive schematics haven’t been effective; other teams find creative ways to get their playmakers involved, while Metcalf and the Steelers offense seem stagnant. He needs to do a better job getting open, especially against physical defenses like the Patriots. With four drops already this season, it’s time for Metcalf to step up and return to the explosive playmaker we saw in week one. The Steelers need him to get going to turn the tide in their favor.
Roman Wilson's season has been far from impressive, with limited involvement in the Steelers' offensive game plan. After just 10 snaps in Week 1, 21 in Week 2, and a mere 9 in Week 3, he has managed only a single catch on two targets, totaling just 7 yards. His struggles extend beyond the passing game; his blocking in the run game has also been subpar. What started as a promising preseason has quickly turned into a realization that the Steelers don’t seem to trust him on the field—making it tough for Wilson to carve out a role as the sixth option behind the likes of D.K., Warren, CAIII, Jonnu, and Muth. In fact, his situation mirrors that of other lesser-known receivers like Skoronek and Scotty Miller. With discussions surfacing about acquiring another wide receiver, it seems the Steelers may be moving on from Wilson as they search for solutions.
Jaylen Warren's usage rate is currently at 52% through the first three games, a figure that may need to be reduced for him to maintain peak effectiveness. We saw a pivotal moment during the Patriots game when Warren, fresh on that final drive, showcased his potential. However, there's a concern: with an increased touch count, Warren has previously struggled with ball security, raising questions about whether he can be viewed as a TRUE RB1. Despite these challenges, he has emerged as the Steelers' most effective offensive weapon. Over the past couple of weeks, it's hard to imagine the team moving the ball at all without his contributions. Warren has been a playmaker, creating opportunities behind a still-struggling offensive line, and he currently leads the team in both catches and receiving yards. For the Steelers to reach their full potential, adjustments will be essential—both for the team and for Warren's utilization.
Nick Herbig's snap count needs a serious increase. With Alex Highsmith’s injury history, it's crucial to maintain a balanced 50/50 split in reps when he returns, or even lean more on Herbig to give T.J. Watt some breathing room. Herbig has consistently shown he can make plays, boasting 9.5 sacks in his limited time on the field. While he faced criticism early in his career for being a liability against the run, his performance this season indicates significant improvement, and he’s trending in the right direction. However, injury concerns linger for both players. Highsmith’s ability to stay healthy remains a major factor since the Steelers would have to consider cutting ties if he can’t prove his reliability. While a trade for Highsmith before the deadline has been brought up, it’s unlikely unless the Steelers find themselves in a specific position. His contract could save the team $14.5 million in 2026, but when he's healthy, Highsmith is undoubtedly a valuable asset. Balancing the roster will be key, and tough decisions may lie ahead.
